Thought I'd give this from my personal point of view. I am a full-time working mother (FTWM) who exclusively breastfeed my own baby. It's not easy at all. It's pretty stressful juggling tight deadlines and projects plus keeping into your pumping schedule but I managed. On to the second child now, I must share these tips to other aspiring mothers out there. Give what's best to your child, no other substitutes comes close
Here's my tips in summary. Sorry they're not in any particular order. I have too much to write but no time to organize them. Please email me if you have any questions regarding breastfeeding. Email to muliati@g m a i l.com for questions.
- Get a good pump. I had a cheap pump once. It was painful to use and not aesthetically pleasing. I recommend Avent Isis manual. It's a good start and durable enough for daily use.
- You can go to work and still fully breastfeed your baby. You should pump the same time your baby's scheduled to feed. That's like every 3-hourly period. Always empty your breast at every pump. This will increase or maintain your milk supply. My personal favorite is Avent Isis manual.
- Your milk won't come out immediately upon pumping. Most would find their milk supply to be very little, hence the lost in confidence. Wait for the let-down reflex. It's the burning sensation you feel when milk starts coming in. It's triggered by the baby sucking from your nipples; the pumps simulate this by vacuum suction. If you're using a manual pump, do some quick pump in succession till you feel the let-down reflex, then slow down your pump. Milk will flow out like crazy. Aim to achieve a few let down reflexes. It could empty your breast and triggers the brain to produce more milk. Remember, the more milk you derive from your breasts, the more milk will be produced.
- My baby latches from one breast at a time at each feed, though most would recommend giving both breasts. If you follow my method, you could latch baby on one breast and pump the other. Keep it as a reserve, just in case you had to go out without baby, you can keep it in the fridge for emergency uses.
- From my observation and as a general guideline, a 1 month old baby takes in 1oz of milk, 2 months old takes in 2oz, 3 months old takes in 3oz, so on and so forth. This might differ in each baby but that's my rough gauge.
- Breastfeeding and supply is all in your mind. If you're confident that you have enough or more for the baby then rest assured, he/she WILL have enough. So do not fret about insufficient milk supply just because your baby wakes up a lot and is crying a lot. Baby cries for all reason so be a real mom and learn their crying cue. You'd be surprised sometimes all they need is a cuddle.
- You DO have enough milk for the baby. Allah has promised that everyone would be given rezeki and to the baby, breast milk is her entitlement. Utilize it. Do not let it disappear. Have faith and believe in His words.
- If baby cries at night and wakes up every 1.5 hours at night, that's perfectly normal. Breast milk digests very easily hence baby gets hungry very easily too. Besides their tiny stomach means they can't store food longer than we adults do. Wake up and feed the baby! Do not give in to too much sleep, you want to be a good mother don't you?
- They tend to poo a lot or do not poo for several days. Both are normal, provided you did not add any other food except breast milk to their diet. No need to rush to the PD for that.
- The fact that you have two breasts means you have more than enough milk for a baby. You could store up extra by pumping while baby is latching on the other. Also you could get at least 1oz after baby has latched. This can maintain or increase your supply.
- Your baby is still feeding off you. Eat a healthy meal. Fenugreek tea or longan tea is a great supplement to boost milk supply. No need to buy those overpriced pharmacy ones. Just get some fenugreek seeds and boil. Drink the soup.
- You don't actually have to sterilize your pump equipment after every use. I don't. The sterilization idea came in the olden days where water cannot be drunk directly from the tap. Singapore water quality is top notch. You can't get diarrhea or sick by accidentally drinking tap water. However you can keep it clean by washing away with the baby bottle liquid cleanser. Breast milk is very oily!
